Shrewsbury

County town of Shropshire

Shrewsbury is often thought to be one of the most attractive towns in the country. It has been called England's finest Tudor town, with old buildings (many of them in the Tudor black-and-white style) separated by narrow roads and even narrower shuts (passageways).

The central part of the town lies almost encircled by a large loop of the River Severn, so that it seems that whatever direction you walk you will come in time to the riverside. Two substantial bridges - the English bridge to the east of the town and the Welsh Bridge to the west - are the principal access routes to the centre.

Shrewsbury was the birthplace of Charles Darwin, originator of the Theory of Evolution, and he is remembered in several places around the town.

Churches

There are numerous churches in Shrewsbury, as well as the Abbey. One of the most distinctive is St Chad's, with its circular shapes. In the St Chad's graveyard there is even a gravestone for Ebenezer Scrooge, from 'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens

In and around The Quarry

The Quarry is Shrewsbury's large open space close to the town centre. There is a restful riverside walk along one side, and views towards the town and St Chad's Church on the other. A feature of The Quarry is The Dingle, a shielded and sunken garden area complete with small lake.
